Benzodiazepine Detox for California Residents
Choosing where to taper is partly clinical and partly practical — supervision, privacy, travel and continuity with the prescriber you already have.
California residents looking for a benzodiazepine detox have plenty of in-state options, and for many people an outpatient taper with their own physician remains the right answer. This piece is for the smaller group whose circumstances point elsewhere: long-term daily use, previous failed reductions, a home environment that makes sleep and low stimulation impossible, or a need for privacy that an in-state facility cannot structurally provide.
Whatever the setting, the clinical requirement is the same. Benzodiazepine discontinuation should be gradual and supervised — the reason the FDA's class-wide boxed warning addresses dependence and withdrawal directly.
Coordinating with your California prescriber
Most guests arrive on an established prescription from a California physician — a family doctor, psychiatrist or pain-management provider. Our clinical team asks for those records in advance, coordinates the pre-arrival taper with that prescriber where possible, and sends a written continuation plan home at discharge.
This matters more than it sounds. A taper conducted abroad and invisible to the home prescriber creates a gap exactly when continuity is most valuable — in the months after the residential stay ends.
The practical travel picture
Direct flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego to Cancún run daily and take around four and a half to five and a half hours. From Cancún International a private transfer of about ninety minutes runs south along the coast to Tulum. Total door-to-door travel from California typically lands at seven to eight hours.
Because tapers should not be compressed to fit travel dates, dose adjustments across the transit window are handled conservatively and the arrival plan is confirmed before a guest leaves California.
Distance is not the point. Separation from the environment where the medication became part of daily life is the point.

What the program involves
Sanctuary Tulum is a licensed medical facility operating in Tulum, Mexico with physicians on site, running since 2011. Coming home to California
The part of the process least discussed in advance is the return. A guest flies home to the same city, the same work, and often the same pressures that shaped the prescription originally. A residential taper that is not planned around that return is only half a plan.
Every guest leaves with a written document covering the remaining reduction schedule where one applies, sleep and nutrition guidance, movement, supplementation, and any continued IV or hyperbaric protocols that can reasonably be sourced in California. Where a home prescriber is involved, that document goes to them directly so the next dose change is made by someone who knows exactly where the taper stopped.
Expectations matter here too. Some guests complete the entire reduction during the residential stay; many finish the last portion at home over subsequent months. Both are normal. The measure of a good program is not how fast the medication came off, but how stable the person is six and twelve months later, and how clear the plan was that got them there.
